Dreams run smack into reality

So, to me, the above article illustrates exactly what is wrong with our government today. Let's ignore the arguments on who is right and who is wrong. Let's step back from the discussions over whether we have come a long way towards Reverend King's dream or whether we still have a long way to go. Let's just focus on one simple fact. Our politicians are so dysfunctional that they can't even make nice nice at public events designed to honor one of the strongest driving forces in our nation's history.
Let me put this in perspective. All week long, various events were held to celebrate the life and work of an amazing man. Both sides invited the other side to attend their events and make speeches. You know, speeches? The only thing our politicians seem to be able to do lately? All they had to do was show up and talk. Get some quality face time and maybe speak about your own views. Nice and simple. You show your support for the Dream and you score some brownie points with the voters.
Instead, each little camp of politicians ignores the other side all together (Okay in fairness, Bush and Bush Jr. didn't show up for valid health reasons.) and make their own little parties designed to push their own political agenda. The Damnocrats bad mouth the Reboobicans and talk about how the Elitist Rich are destroying the Dream of King. The Reboobicans scream that lax social and economic policies are turning America into a Welfare State. The entire time, both sides are completely ignoring the main spirit of King's dream.
If our politicians can't even set aside their animosity for a simple meet/greet/speak where they only have to pretend to like each other, then what hopes do we have of them ever achieving any sort of real success in fixing our nation's problems? Both sides are so busy arguing about who is right and who is wrong that they can't work together or even appear in public together. If they cannot compromise over the simple stuff, how can they possibly ever come to an agreement over the hard stuff.
Whether people like it or not, the only way we are going to make any inroads into fixing our problems is going to be by making compromises. Neither side is going to get things their own way no matter how hard they try. To fix things, both Parties are going to have to, at least in the short term, lose a little. Since this goes against the Politician mindset, I don't see it happening anytime soon.
End of Rant
